On May 9, Starbucks debuted a few new drinks and a new cake pop. Already having plans to hit the mall with Alexis, I knew we’d be stopping to try these. Being the caffeine sensitive queen that I am, I opted for the Chocolate Java Mint Frappuccino with just one pump of the Frappuccino roast, as usual.
First, a funny story that could’ve gone terribly wrong but thankfully did not.
The Starbucks app sometimes adds a ‘1’ in front of alterations (for all drinks, not just this Frappuccino). So when I recently adjusted a drink down to one dose of caffine it read like ‘1 1 Pump Frappuccino Roast’ and the baristas put in ELEVEN pumps!
Thankfully, I caught it and they even admitted they were confused by the request so we all had a good laugh and they remade it with just one pump. Whew! Just a PSA to anyone else in my boat.
What’s in the Chocolate Java Mint Frappuccino?
The Chocolate Java Mint Frappuccino features chocolate and mint blended together with their Frappuccino Roast. It’s finished with a layer of mocha sauce, whipped cream, and a chocolate cookie mint sprinkle topping.
Will your Chocolate Java Mint Frappuccino always look this picture perfect? Probably not, but as every grandparent has said… you eat with your mouth, not your eyes.
My Review of the New Frappuccino
So how does the Chocolate Java Mint Frappuccino actually stack up against the hype?
Honestly, pretty well!
As a huge Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookie enthusiast, I’m a big fan of a chocolate and mint combination in any form.
Of course, my Frappuccino doesn’t look quite like the stock photo. But as mentioned, I made a few alterations, most noticeably was no whipped cream, so my chocolate cookie mint topping isn’t as prominent.
Taste wise, it was much saltier than I would’ve thought. This isn’t necessarily a negative, but I was a little surprised when I’d get a saltier versus sweeter sip. Anyone else notice this?
As far as texture, there were a lot of cookies and small mint pieces, making it chunkier than most Frappuccinos. This is an excellent menu item to try if you also like my Starbucks Secret Menu Cookies & Cream Frappuccino.
Overall there’s a good balance of mostly chocolate with hints of mint and the occasional salt (still unsure from where) but it all worked together really well.
How to Order the Chocolate Java Mint Frappuccino
All you have to do is ask for a Chocolate Java Mint Frappuccino in the size you’d like and your barista has it from there. However, as I’ve already touched on, you can easily make some adjustments.
My general rule is to reduce the caffeine and calories as much as I can without compromising the drink. So for this Frappuccino I ordered it with only one pump of Frappuccino roast, non fat milk and no whipped cream.
It was still incredibly rich and delicious because I didn’t alter sauces or flavors, just the type of milk, amount of caffeine and skipped the whip.
The New Bumblebee Cake Pop
Not going to lie… I was very confused when I got mine. I hadn’t seen it anywhere beforehand, and while I’m not sure what I was expecting, it wasn’t this. It’s very cartoony, which is fine, but it just doesn’t look like a bee, does it?
When I got home I looked online at other reviews and was relieved to find I wasn’t alone. Apparently the whole internet is confused at Starbucks’ take on a bumblebee. Maybe if we put it in front of a more natural habit…
Nope. Still looks like your creepy neighbor’s very yellow cat, except now maybe it got outside. π€·ββοΈ I still think it’s cute but definitely don’t think it resembles a bumblebee.
Taste-wise though, it was phenomenal. It’s a vanilla cake and buttercream mixture inside a yellow-dyed chocolate icing which made for a fantastic combination. The buttercream mixture must be how it maintains such a moist consistency, it’s out of this world! I can’t wait until I can get a cake pop for Alexis when we make Starbucks runs, too!
