I was honored when my friend asked me to make her a custom rustic wedding chalkboard sign for her wedding. I’m no professional artist but my handwriting is legible and I love a good craft, especially when it’s such an important task, so I was up for it.
Something to keep in mind is that this was from a wedding in 2017 and I’m just now noticing I didn’t share the project, so I don’t have a ton of pictures. However, I assure you this project is worth sharing!
Supplies Needed
- Rustic wedding chalkboard sign
- Liquid chalk markers
Once you pick a chalkboard sign (options below) and find liquid chalk markers you love (recommendation below), all there is to it is to do it! Put chalk marker to chalkboard and let your finish project sit undisturbed for at least 12 hours to ensure maximum dryness.
Making a Rustic Wedding Chalkboard Sign
This particular sign was for sharing key dates in the couple’s relationship. My first step was making sure I had every single date and caption 100% correct per the bride, then measuring out how much space each line was allocated based on my particular board and the number of lines I had.
My favorite touch was that they wanted to include their wedding hashtag on the sign so guests could share their photos. Genius!
Picking a Chalkboard Sign
Amazon is full of chalkboard sign options, here are some I recommend in each profile.
- Tabletop wood chalkboard sign without legs
- Tabletop wood chalkboard sign with legs (similar to mine)
- Rustic whitewash chalkboard sign
- Scalloped edge wood chalkboard sign
- Multi pack of mini wood chalkboard signs
Using Liquid Chalk Markers
Liquid chalk markers are a crafter’s dream. They give the same chalky, textured look as actual pieces of chalk but allow you the precision of a liquid marker. I’ve been using Crafty Croc liquid chalk markers since 2016 and recommend the 18 pack for the variety.
Another perk to using liquid chalk markers is that if you leave it on long enough, it can become permanent. Or, if you only need a sign to keep the chalk semi permanently it will still come off after a few days. Sometimes I use a light cleaning spray to remove the chalk if I’ve left it on for too long. Of course, this will depend on the brand you buy, but that’s how I’ve used my Craft Croc markers.
The Final Product: My Rustic Wedding Chalkboard Sign
Once I knew what I was writing and how much space each line needed the project went quickly. It was the perfect touch to the space the bride had in mind.
Keep in mind, my photography nor camera circa 2017 were the best quality. But surely you get the picture, the sign went perfectly next to their wedding card box with flowers and candles. It was a gorgeous, intimate reception with awesome food and music, and I was so honored to be able to help make their day more special in this way.
Have you ever worked with liquid chalk markers before? They can be tricky at first, but if you practice a little on a scrap piece of chalkboard paper (or actual chalkboard) you’ll get more confident after a few takes. I’d love to hear if you’ve given my rustic wedding chalkboard sign a try. Leave your tips and projects in the comments!
