There’s many roads to glowing, clear skin and I believe it’s about what you’re doing on both the inside and outside. I’ve compiled a list of my regular habits that help to improve, maintain and repair my skin’s health.
Quality Facial Moisturizer
From personal experience, the combination of these oils and ingredients are excellent for maintaining elasticity (a.k.a. avoid those wrinkle and fine lines) by keeping your skin moisturized. As much as I love my Julep moisturizer, I know it may not be for everyone. What I suggest is to keep an eye out for these ingredients in a potential facial moisturizer for you:
- Jojoba oil to heal skin and seal hydration
- Aragon oil to repair and replenish with essential fatty acids
- Coconut oil to calm skin via natural anti inflammatory properties
- Olive oil to keep skin soft and supple
- Squalane (plant derived) to help all of the key ingredients above absorb rapidly

Personally, I like a lighter moisturizer to let the skin breathe easier. Try a few different types of moisturizers until you find what works best for you.
Bonus: Lip Moisturizer. Just as important as the facial moisturizer, especially if you ever wear any lip makeup. Similarly to skin, if left un-moisturized your lips can end up dry and cracked. Then, when you wear lipstick, lip stain, color etc. you’ll only emphasize their poor, cracked state.
Matcha: Drink Your Way to Clear Skin
I swear by my matcha. If you’re not familiar with this seriously buzzy beverage let me share a few key data points.
- Matcha is packed with antioxidants, which are great for:
- Preventing cellular damage.
- Keeping skin hydrated (a.k.a. healthy and clear).
- A single serving has 10 times the health benefits due to actually ingesting the tea via their powder form.
- Green tea is widely known for its contributions toward improved brain function, fat burn/loss, and lowering your risk of cancer.
Matcha is also a great source of energy for your day. Each serving has about 1/3 as much caffeine as a cup of coffee (honestly, you’d never know, it’s a great source of natural energy). I’ve always been a bit caffeine sensitive so this lower serving works well for that, too.

Pro tip: For an even bigger dose of antioxidants try white tea, too. It’s the only tea with more antioxidants than green tea (thank you Teavana for this extensive knowledge). Even Starbucks seems to be getting on board with white tea, thanks to their acquisition of Teavana on December 31, 2012.
Cruciferous Vegetables = Clear Skin Diet
Kale, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower and broccoli are just a few different keys to clear skin. We all need more of these. In my opinion, you don’t find these in ready-made or fast food options as often, so we need to work them in ourselves. Once in a routine, these veggies can act as an internal skin moisturizer and are great frontline defenders for acne.
For more insight, this article from Well + Good does a good job of talking about these skin friendly veggies a little more in-depth.
Wear Makeup Lightly and Sparingly
One of the first things I do when I get home for the night is take off my makeup. I used to wait until it was time to wash up for bed, but why? If you’re just kicking back and relaxing around the house, let your skin do the same.
No Makeup at All
Okay, so this may not be an everyday solution, but most weekends I don’t wear a drop of makeup from Friday evening when I get home until Monday morning. Same goes for days I work from home.
And guess what? If you’re doing the best by your skin you won’t have a reason to wear makeup (or at least as much) because you’ll feel more comfortable in your beautiful, hydrated, clear skin.
Wear SPF Everyday, Period
Yes, it’s the oldest trick in the book, but there’s a reason for that. It’s especially important if you love summers like I do, to use SPF to prevent sun damage at any age.
But SPF isn’t just for summer. It should be part of your daily routine year-round, particularly for your face (i.e. in your moisturizer, concealer, makeup setting spray, etc.). Your face is most sensitive and most exposed to sun, so it’s important to be proactive about protecting it.
Use Aloe to Heal Your Clear Skin
When the sun inevitably sneaks through a missed sunscreen spot, or you commit to planting mom’s garden for Mother’s Day and forgot your SPF (womp womp), you’ll want to have some Aloe on hand.
I use this in both the morning and night when I have a burn. I find using it twice a day keeps my skin from drying out and peeling. Aloe is your whole first aid kit for glowing skin, and I’ve really grown to love my Teami Aloe. Save 20 with code TFFH20 on a bottle of your own!
