While we eat a lot of the same proteins, they never really ever get old. Time and time again I preach that the secret to eating good food is changing up how you eat it. You almost have to trick your mind into thinking you’re eating something brand new to keep this good-for-you food appetizing and interesting (or at least this seems to be the case for me). My latest ‘trick’ is my garlic parmesan crust.
In this recipe, I’m demonstrating how to prepare it on tilapia but it can really be put on anything. If you’ve never added a homemade breading to a meat or fish before you’re about to learn just how simple it is.
Simple Garlic Parmesan Crust Ingredients
- 2 tilapia filets
- 1 large egg
- 2 cups of corn flakes
- 1 tbsp of garlic salt
- 1/2 cup parmesan cheese
- Quart sized baggie (more room to work)
Preparing and Cooking Your Crust
1. Ensure the tilapia is completely thawed, then pat dry with a paper towel. Dryness is key to making the breading stick.
2. Put the corn flakes and Parmesan in a plastic baggie, eliminating all extra air. Crunch the corn flakes until they’re in small, granular pieces.
3. Have two bowls ready, one for the egg and garlic salt and one for the corn flakes and Parmesan. Also have your greased baking dish ready for the final product to go in the oven.
4. Dip (or soak, if time allows) the tilapia in the egg and garlic mixture. This acts as the adhesive agent.
5. Once soaked, firmly press the tilapia into the corn flakes and Parmesan so it adheres to the tilapia. Once sufficiently coated, put the tilapia into the pre-greased baking dish. If you have leftover breading, add as much as you’d like to the baking dish once all of the fish has been breaded and added.
6. Cook the tilapia at 350 degrees for 15-18 minutes or until done. Serve with a kale salad or Sriracha Aioli Brussels Sprouts and viola, another delicious, healthy meal in the books!
Have you tried making your own homemade crust or breading before? Would you give this simple Garlic Parmesan Crust a try? I’d love to hear what you’d put it on and feedback in the comments.
