Cheese spreads are officially better than butter, you heard it here first! If you’re a cheese lover like myself try spending your butter calories in a tastier way with Laughing Cow cheese wedges. My philosophy is that if you’re going to have bread and spread, make the topping the one you want.
In my pursuit of making the perfect pasta sauce I bought a container of Laughing Cow Creamy Asiago cheese wedges and had some leftover. I’m not one for waste and so my cheese spread and bread was born.
Using Cheese Spreads
Throughout the week I go to adding my cheese wedges to other things, particularly on my French bread that I ate alongside the leftover pasta. I’m not one for plain bread (whoΒ is?) so I threw a few slices in the toaster and spread with one wedge of Laughing Cow over both slices. It was a deliciousΒ topping that only cost me 35 calories.
Let’s break down the Laughing Cow cheese wedge versus the alternatives.
Imperial Butter aka ‘Real Butter’
We won’t get into the butter versus margarine debate, but I did want to provide a comparison to both for whoever sits in either camp.
The Imperial Butter has the most calories and fat per serving of all the options. I’d love to share some advantages to using this spread over the others, but really I think the only advantage is taste, if that’s your preference.
Country Crock Calcium Enriched Margarine
Country Crock landed right in the middle on most accounts. Less calories, fat and sodium than the Imperial Butter, but still more than the cheese wedge option.
Taste-wise, I’ve always preferred margarine over ‘real butter’ but that is purely my preference. I now know it’s also a bit healthier, so I feel a little validated in my choices throughout the years!
Laughing Cow Creamy Asiago Cheese Wedges
The numbers speak for themselves. For a smaller serving of either butter or margarine you’re looking at more calories, more fat and arguably much less flavor. The cheese wedge does have more sodium than the other two options, so that may be something to consider on a case by case basis.
Another perk of the cheese spread options is that you’re getting a bit of protein from the cheesy alternative. Neither the butter or margarine have any protein at all.
Cheese Spreads Versus Butter
This is an actual size comparison of one serving of butter and one serving of Laughing Cow. You’re getting more cheese out of one single serving in addition to less of all the bad stuff aforementioned.
Do yourself a favor and ditch the yellow fat and stock that fridge with some low cal cheese! Laughing Cow has been my favorite replacement, hands down! If you make the switch leave a comment below and let me know what delicious flavor you tried!
