Laundry Room Makeover Inspiration

One room that hasn’t gotten much design attention is our laundry room. We’ve done a few basic things to make the room more functional, but it’s not the cute space I’d like. Since it’s a small space, I feel like I can easily get this one done by end of summer. Here’s what I have in mind for the new design and function for my laundry room makeover.

Laundry Room Charcoal Wall

Let’s step inside and chat details.

My Laundry Room Makeover Mood Board

When we had the whole house painted last spring we knew we wanted a darker laundry room, so we painted it a deep charcoal color. Our machines are white, shelves are white and now we have white curtains hung.

Starting to see a pattern? We’re keeping the decor on the light side. The moody walls are wonderful but we don’t want the room to read “cave” overall. I’ll be incorporating lots of soft greenery, white accents and lighter wood tones throughout.

Functional Laundry Hampers

Right now we have four total hampers throughout the house. It’s organized, but it isn’t the most efficient nor sleek method. Kevin and I each have a hamper in our closet, then I this coral laundry basket for my athletic clothes and the white and wire bin in the corner for whites/towels.

Ideally, I’d get one bin for in the laundry room that has three compartments. The ones in our closet are both for colors so there’s no need for two, we’ve just always had them and got stuck in that habit. I’ve been shopping for a new one for a while and below are my top picks so far. The one I purchase will ultimately be based on which one matches the final room design the best.

Laundry Room Shelving and Storage

Right now we have a four-foot white ClosetMaid shelf that Kevin installed shortly after we moved in. It’s just a rack so all our products are out in the open. It’s convenient, but it’s not the cutest look. These shelves are fantastic for laundry rooms though because they have a sub-bar for hanging wet clothes.

Laundry Room Shelf Hangers

I’d love to also get cabinets for concealed storage and use the top of these shelves for extra guest towels and maybe a few baskets for decor/additional storage.

Laundry Room Storage Basket

A few baskets like this one on top of the shelf in the corner in various sizes would be a great eye catching piece of decor. Plus, you could easily use a few of them as concealed storage space for laundry pods, sheets, clothes pins, etc.

Laundry Room Hangers

Honestly, hangers aren’t worth the attention to fine detail, and here’s why. When you hang clothes to dry it’s much easier to just grab the hanger and move it from laundry room to closet. If you have different hangers in the laundry room and your closet they’re all going to end up mixed up.

Laundry Room Storage Shelf

For any laundry room I recommend using the exact same hangers all throughout the house. They’re going to end up everyone anyway so may as well not sweat how it will look. Mine are these white hangers ones from Target because they match everything and are super economical.

Ironing Board Solution

This is Kevin’s ironing board from before I knew him. It makes the LOUDEST nails-on-a-chalkboard sound every time we open it, which is why we rarely open it. The towel on top is actually what I use to iron. I put it down on the dryer and iron (mostly Cricut projects) on it versus setting up the whole board.

To solution this, I want to find a wall-mounted ironing board that can be hidden when not in use. This one below caught my eye and will potentially be the one that mounts on the same wall as the door to fold down over our machines.

Over the Laundry Machine Decor Plan

This space is large and currently entirely vacant. I’d love to put a natural wood shelf on the wall the width of the machines, just above the tops of them. On it, I’d put little jars for easy access to laundry pods, dryer sheets etc. and have a little tray for laundry treasure and other miscellaneous items.

Laundry Room Wall Decor

I bought a few pieces for the walls in here a long time ago, probably even a year at this point. Thankfully, they were on clearance at Hobby Lobby and cost next to nothing because I’m not sure every piece will get used. Here are the three pieces I have so far.

The two on the ends are just black and white and will likely get used, but the one in the middle has a light blue that I just don’t envision in this space. It will really depend what I end up doing big decor-wise (shelving, clothing rack) as to which ones of these pieces ultimately get used.

Thank goodness for Mercari because that’s where all of my brand new, unused pieces end up so hopefully someone can get good use out of them.

Are you as eager to see what happens in this space as I am? My laundry room makeover is WAY overdue, so hopefully I’m back here before long with the reveal blog post. Be sure to subscribe for new post notifications!
