In the past few days I received different brand’s emails talking about Sprig and finally downloaded the app. One email for me means it can be hit or miss. Maybe I give it a shot, maybe I don’t. Honestly, it depends on how well you sold me during your elevator-pitch. But two convincing emails? I guess I should at least download the app and see what’s on the menu, right?
About Sprig
Sprig was established in 2013, which was unbeknownst to me until literally, 6 hours ago. They’re currently servicing Chicago, San Francisco and Palo Alto.
For anyone who’s ever tried UberEATS, Sprig is strikingly similar. Except, in my opinion, their food is much more delicious and worth the buy-in. From what I can tell, they’re their own entity/kitchen, which is where their ability to be more transparent about their products and nutrition. On the flip side, UberEATS is delivering food from local restaurants, and can’t always provide that information in-app.
Personally, I think Sprig has the best mobile food-ordering game to date. They’re targeting those health nuts and calorie counters, given that eating healthy is a on a huge up-turn these days.
Exploring the Sprig App
On the app, my eye is immediately caught by the high-quality graphics. Images register much faster than words, so their developers are definitely on the right track. Once studied more critically, the food on the menu looks amazing. To attest to its marketing powers, I downloaded it with the intention of ‘checking it out’ but here I am, writing about the entire ordering experience.
I scrolled through the Chicago menu and a delicious Tomatillo Salsa Verde Chicken Burrito caught my eye. So, like any human being with a grumbling tummy, I started diving deeper.
Other items you could order that day included a BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich with Mustard Potato Salad, a Grilled Chipotle Chicken Salad with Jicama & Avocado and a Seasonal Fruit & Goat Cheese Kale Salad. For dessert, you could add a Chocolate Chip Cookie to your order.
They also allow you to see upcoming menus as far as seven days in advance. As such, I saw some fabulous options on Saturday and Sunday for brunching! Sprig is also seemingly doing a great job of keeping options open for vegetarians, vegans, and gluten-free diets. Allergies and nutrition is available in the Menu, for those needing to check some boxes before nomming.
A little green fact: you order comes with cutlery from taterware.com, and is all biodegradable. Earth for the win!
When My Order Arrived
my burrito was just as delicious and appealing as it sounded on the menu. The best part for me though, was that I felt good after eating it. I have mobile ordered burgers before and while they sound amazing in theory, you usually feel like taking a nap shortly thereafter, and then regret having such an indulgent and greasy lunch.
It was a delicious, healthy choice. Low quality photo of high quality food.
Sprig GO
You also have the option of becoming a Sprig GO member, which is $10 a month, and boasts free delivery for its membership. If you plan on ordering at least 5 times during the month it’s definitely worth it, but otherwise it looks like the delivery fee is a flat $2 rate per order.
Pro Tip: Buddy up with coworkers or roommates to split the delivery fee or monthly Sprig GO membership to be economical if you become a frequent flyer.
It also doesn’t hurt that I got what appears to be a free cookie in my first order. I’m curious, not sure if that was on purpose or a happy accident? Let me know in the comments if you get a surprise cookie in your first order!
Sprig offers dinner seven nights a week, lunch service Monday through Friday, and brunch on Saturday and Sunday.
EDIT: It is with a sad heart that I learned Sprig closed its doors across the U.S. for good in 2017. Thank you for the delicious experience I had while you were in Chicago!
